The State of Biosciences in Nebraska

Nebraska’s bioscience industry has a specialized employment concentration and is growing. The state has employment specializations in two of the four major subsectors – agricultural feedstock and chemicals and medical devices and equipment. Academic bioscience research and development expenditures totaled $251 million in 2008, led by biological sciences ($114 million) followed by medical sciences ($70 million) and agricultural sciences ($57 million).

The Roadmap was a partnership between the Nebraska Legislature Natural Resources Committee and Bio Nebraska and represents a five-year strategy to grow the bioscience industry in Nebraska.

Bioscience academic research and development expenditures have grown by 23.5 percent since 2004 reaching $544 million in 2008, with nearly equal shares in medical and biological sciences.
