Michigan Biosciences Legislative Caucus

MichBio was instrumental in forming the State Biosciences Legislative Caucus (BLC) that serves to educate legislators on biotechnology issues. In so doing, we believe that we can ultimately impact policies and programs to benefit the state’s biosciences industry and help make Michigan a leader in this market sector. The BLC is a bipartisan, bicameral body whose membership is open to any interested legislators.

Biosciences in Michigan

During the seven years ending in 2008, the research, testing and medical laboratories subsector in Michigan grew faster than the national average, as did employment in agricultural feedstock and chemicals. Total academic bioscience research expenditures in the State were $951 million in 2008, mainly in medical and biological sciences. In the last six years, bioscience venture capital investments had risen steadily to a peak of $138 million in 2008 before falling off as the national sector did in VC funding in 2008. The six‐year cumulative venture funding total for Michigan was $440 million.
