Pennsylvania has a leading and specialized bioscience industry. Among the four major subsectors, the State has a specialized employment concentration in two—drugs and pharmaceuticals (location quotient of 1.65), and research, testing and medical laboratories (1.53). Academic bioscience research and development expenditures totaled $1.61 billion in 2008, heavily concentrated in medical sciences ($1.1 billion).

The state is a top employer in bioscience industries, a leading innovator in bioscience-related patents, and nationally-ranked investor in academic R&D and recipient of federal research grants.

Pennsylvania Bio recognizes that policy makers again face difficult decisions in the upcoming budget cycle. With this in mind, we believe that this is the right time to engage in the planning of a long-term strategy for the biosciences in PA.

Pennsylvania Bio, the only statewide association in the commonwealth dedicated solely to the issues of the bioscience industry, urges legislators to recognize the importance of bioscience companies in Pennsylvania toward improving patient care, improving health globally, and to the economic growth of the commonwealth.
